ROUTE 66 MILITARY VEHICLES
SUN COUNTRY AMATEUR RADIO STATION
In 1926, the nation’s 1 st Federal Highway System, cobbled together existing
Local, State and National roads from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, covering
a total of 2,448 miles – Route 66. The U.S. 66 Hvvy Assoc. advertised it as “the
shortest, best and most scenic route from Chicago through St. Louis to Los
Angeles”. It became a military transport corridor moving troops and supplies
between military bases. Motels saw an increase in occupancy, as families of
servicemen stationed at militar’y bases stayed for long stretches. Route 66
facilitated one of the greatest ‘Wartime mobilizations, as thousands of
jobseekers headed west to work in defense plants. The MVPA’s – Military
Vehicle Preservation Association – 911.st Anniversary Convoy retraced the
original 1926 Route 66 from Sept 16th -Oct 14th, 2017. (4) of many vehicles:
